Kaua`i Concert Association Presents: El Mundo

Kaua`i Concert Association Presents:  El Mundo.  El Mundo is a chamber group dedicated to the performance of sixteenth through nineteenth century Latin American, Spanish and Italian chamber music. The Arts and Traditions of Hula at Kilauea

Saturday, January 26:
The Arts and Traditions of Hula at Kilauea. This VAC program features a Hula Kahiko Informance with kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah. A 50-minute narrated demonstration of preparation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant at the hula platform in Hawaii This outdoor presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near VAC Gallery. The audience is encouraged to bring sitting mats and sun/rain gear.  10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  On the same day, there is a hands-on cultural demonstration from 9:30 am to 1:30 p.m. at VAC Gallery porch. Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. All events are free (donations welcome); park entrance fees apply.

Kulanihako`i: Living Waters

Kulanihako`i: Living Waters.  MACC’s original hula drama, which draws from epic Hawaiian myths over 2000 years old, returns to Maui for a final curtain call. With dance, chant, storytelling and dramatic interpretation, the elemental lake Kūlanihāko`i: Living Waters depicts the many facets of water and its continuous relationship between the ocean, land and sky as told through the eyes of contemporary Native Hawaiians. This three-day event honors Hawaii Island’s cherished cultural historian, legendary hula master and Living Treasure of Hawaii, Iolani Luahine. “Thirty Years of Ekk – One Long Hawaiian Kine Pardee”

“Thirty Years of Ekk – One Long Hawaiian Kine Pardee”.  E Kanikapila Kakou (EKK) is the Hawaiian phrase meaning “everyone jam” or backyard musician concerts.  This is a three month long celebration of music at the Kaua`i Beach Resort, Nukoli`i between the airport and the Wailua Golf Course. 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Concert schedule for January is: Monday, January 21 – Keale, LT Smooth, Donald Kaulia (Let the Celebration Begin!); Friday, January 25 – Keali`i Reichel (concert), show time 7:00 p.m. ($25 general admission); Monday, January 28 – Aunty Bev Muraoka and Her Gang (The Queen of Chalangalang at Kaua`i Pardee Central).  For information call (808) 245-2733 or visit www.gardenislandarts.org.

Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra Winter Concert – Student Concerto Competition

Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra Winter Concert – Student Concerto Competition.  The KPO celebrates young talent by holding a statewide concerto competition in November. Winners of the concerto competition are then featured in a winter concert, held at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows Pavilion, 68-1400 Mauna Lani Drive, Kamuela.  These talented musicians from the ages of 11 to 17 will play various classical piano pieces to showcase their talents.
