Obon Dance & Festival

Throughout the Month of June:
Obon Dance & Festival.
  The Obon tradition was brought to Hawai`i by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making.  Free.  Festivities and Dance schedules and locations are listed below (subject to change):

  • Friday & Saturday, June 2 & 3:  West Kaua`i Hongwanji Mission – Hanapepe Temple, 1-3860 Kaumuali`i Hwy., Hanapape.  Service Friday 6 p.m., Dancing 7:30 p.m. both nights. For more information call (808) 338-3195

Candlelit Tours at the Baldwin Home Museum.
  Step back in time and visit the Baldwin Home Museum with a tour by candle light. Tours include free light refreshments on the lanai. Tours take place on the half hour from 6 to 8 p.m. Located on the corner of Front and Dickenson Street in the heart of historic Lahaina. Exhibit – Piero Resta – Illuminatus.
Schaefer International Gallery; Tue – Sun 10am – 5 pm (Also open before select Castle Theater shows and during intermission). This retrospective exhibition honors an artist whose life’s work was infused with passion and spiritual transcendence within natural and mythological worlds. Piero Resta’s artistic career was immersed in the alchemy of philosophy, science, poetry, and experimentation. The selection of paintings, sculpture, and personal archives on display reveals the axial relationship of his Italian heritage and influences of ancient traditions and architecture, integrated with the primitive vibrant life force of his home in Kaupo, Maui. This exhibition celebrates the legacy left by a man who embraced the world as a celestial navigator and willingly shared his grace for all to discover. FREE Admission!

Lantern Floating Hawai`i 2017

Lantern Floating Hawai`i 2017.
 Locals and visitor alike gather to honor loved ones and generate hope for the future. Those wanting to personally float a lantern during the ceremony may receive a single individual lantern per family or group, at the Lantern Request Tent at Ala Moana Beach Park on event day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until lanterns run out.  Ala Moana Beach Park, 1201 Ala Moana Blvd., Honolulu. Banana Poka Roundup!

Banana Poka Roundup!
  A festive family event for young and old, Banana Poka is an environmental fair that combines education of Kaua`i’s forest environment with good fun and Hawaiian music. There will be environmental exhibits, games for kids, Banana Poka basket making, crafts, drawings, Hawaiian entertainment, snacks, a silent auction, and a crowing contest at noon. Guided tours of the CCC Camp will be available during the noon hour. Free Admission with donations accepted at Koke`e Museum. Limited parking in the Meadow with a short walk up to the camp. Pedal to the Meadow bicycle races

Pedal to the Meadow bicycle races. 
Three USAC-sanctioned road bicycling races over two days: 8th annual Pedal to the Meadow hill climb from Kekaha to Koke`e on Saturday; followed by the Mana Time Trial and Cycle on the Strip Criterium in Kekaha/Mana on Sunday.
