  Cleopatra’s Barge was an opulent yacht built in Massachusetts in 1816. It became The Royal Yacht of King Kamehameha II but was wrecked in 1824. It cost about $50,000 to build, and about the same amount for luxury furnishings. Lei Day Celebration

Monday, May 1:
Lei Day Celebration.
May Day is Lei Day in Hawai`i.  The event features the annual Lei Court, as well as local entertainment and hula halau. The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association traditionally plays in the lei exhibit/Kulana Lei area (open area between the bandstand and the shell). The Lei Contest Exhibit is open to the public from 1 to 5:30 p.m.  Visit the Kulana Lei/Tutu’s Hale, a village of Hawaiian artisans, as they share their talents and skills with exhibits and demonstrations throughout the day. In addition to Kulana Lei, craft, lei and food vendors will also be in the park all day.  The event is free and open to the public. May Day is Lei Day – May Day Festivities at Volcano Art Center Gallery.
  Celebrate May Day at the Volcano Art Center Gallery porch.  All are welcome to join in the festivities, featuring hands on lei making demonstrations.  May Day honors the unique way that Hawai`i’s multi-cultural traditions are woven together to create a more interesting, more tolerant and more beautiful community.  With hundreds of fragrant blossoms and plant materials provided by the Volcano Art Center Gallery, learn tips to sewing the perfect lei, the proper protocol of giving and receiving a lei, and more. There will also be live music by Wes Awana and friends, and impromptu hula dancing by Noe Noe Kekaualua.  Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Rd., Volcano Village.  11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Free admission, park entrance fees may apply.

Niaulani Nature Walk

Niaulani Nature Walk.
  A free, guided rain forest tour in Volcano. This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces visitors to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, and the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians.
