Maui Calls 2018: In Celebration of Hula. Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s signature gala event begins with a fresh flower lei greeting and Hawaiian music serenade. Mix, mingle, and taste delectable pūpū created by chefs from stellar Maui restaurants and specialty food purveyors. Enjoy premium wines served by vintners from boutique wineries around the world and dance the night away to live music. Silent and live auctions offer the chance to bid on hundreds of items, from fabulous Hawai`i staycations and fine wines to “uniquely Maui” items, such as special house parties and “uniquely MACC” items, like autographed music instruments & more. Hula Kahiko Performance. Hula halau from across Hawai`i and beyond perform in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, located just a short walking distance from the Volcano Art Gallery in Ka`auea. 10:30 a.m. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mat. Duke’s OceanFest 2018: Waikiki’s Premier Ocean Sports Festival. The annual Duke’s OceanFest features a variety of ocean sports that were close to Duke Kahanamoku’s heart, including Longboard Surfing, Paddleboard Racing, Swimming, Tandem Surfing, Surf Polo, Beach Volleyball, and Stand-Up Paddling. The festival celebrates Duke Kahanamoku’s life, his athletic contributions, and his spirit that still lives on. The festival also includes a number of surfing events, including a Keiki Surf Competition, a Wahine Longboard Competition, a Kane Longboard Competition, and tandem events. Battleship Missouri Presents its Picnic on the Pier. The event includes prize giveaways, keiki activities, free tours of the Mighty Mo (valued at $29 for adults), and entertainment by local entertainers Simple Souls. The pier will provide fun for all ages with giant Jenga, TicTacToe and checkers. Guests will be able to capture the moment at the Photo Booth. Guests are welcome to BYOFD (Bring Your Own Food & Drink) to the event; however, grills and glass containers are prohibited. Food and craft beverages are also available from local vendors. Maui Forest Birds is dedicated to the conservation and research of rare and endangered bird species on Maui. Annual Kona Diaifukuji Orchid Club Show & Sale. The free event offers attendees a complimentary orchid boutonniere corsage – while they last. This year’s theme, “Conservation of Orchids Through Creativity”, illustrates how to display orchids using recycled materials and there will be an unusual origami display of endangered North American orchids called “OrchidGami” by founding club member and historian Carol Zakahi. There will be a guided tour through the on-site Orchid Grotto, demonstrating how to beautify a problematic space. Enjoy an elaborate and colorful display of live blooming cattleya, cymbidium, dendrobium, phalaenopsis, miltonia, vanda orchids and more. Cameras are welcome. Veteran members staff a Question and Answer Booth where attendees can get expert advice on caring for orchids at different Kona elevations, Waimea and South Point. There will be an outdoor sale of high quality orchid species and hybrids grown by club members and select Big Island commercial growers. Club members will sell home-baked goods and drinks, and membership info will be available. Pilgrimage of Compassion. Celebrate the timeless spiritual vision of a valley long recognized as a healing sanctuary. Grandmaster Riley Lee, world-renowned shakuhachi flutist, will issue a call to the pilgrims of the world. The members of Taiko Kaua`i will add their drumbeats to open the event. There will also be a bonsai exhibit, ikebana and calligraphy demos, bake sale, silent auction, as well as mochi and taro pounding, cultural and culinary demonstrations. Please bring an umbrella and wear comfortable shoes for this hillside walk.
