The original members of UB40, Ali Campbell, Astro, and Mickey Virtue, enjoyed huge success from 1979 until 2008, including multiple #1, top-10, gold- and platinum-selling albums; Grammy nominations; and four #1 hits worldwide. Ali, Mickey, and Astro helped define reggae music for a generation. The multiracial band pooled a diverse set of influences to put a fresh, indigenous slant on Jamaican reggae. Their most recent album is A Real Labour of Love, released in March 2018, an album much in the vein of their Labour of Love series of albums. Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival. The program will feature performances by Next Generation (keiki) steel guitar players Ho`ailona Mahuka (11), Pono Fernandez (13), Joey Misailidis (13), and Malie Lyman (14), and Hawaiian steel guitarists Alan Akaka, Jeff Au Hoy, Bobby Ingano, Kapono Lopes, and Greg Sardinha. This will be Kapono’s first appearance at a HIMELE festival. Joey’s younger sister Tai (11) will be featured on the U-bass as a Next Generation musician. Makana. Award-winning slack-key guitar player, singer, and composer, Makana, in a special Valentine’s Day concert. A protégé of the Hawaiian slack key guitar legends, including Bobby Moderow Jr. and the late master Uncle Sonny Chillingworth, Makana has dedicated his life to perpetuating as well as evolving the traditional Hawaiian art form. From this slack key tradition Makana has evolved his own dynamic, high-octane style, coined “Slack Rock”: slack key infused with elements of bluegrass, rock, blues and raga. Described as “dazzling” by The New York Times, Makana has become an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, composer and activist who is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change.
