Words and Wine Author Event

Words and Wine Author Event. Words and Wine Author evening happens August 6, 2019 at 6PM at Kona Stories book store in the Keauhou Shopping Center. The public is welcome to attend this free author event and enjoy their stories and complimentary wine and pupu. Authors will speak for 20 minutes about their book followed by Q&A. August’s featured authors are: Amy Patterson, Angela Leslee and Donna Beumler. This event starts at 6 PM with an informal meet and greet merging into a more formal book presentation from each author and concluding around 8 PM after a Q&A session. Dress is casual aloha wear. Free Kuhio Beach Hula Show featuring Ainsley Halemanu And Hula Halau Ka Liko O Ka Palai. This authentic Hawaiian hula show opens with torch lighting and traditional blowing of the conch shell. At the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound, diagonally across Kalakaua Ave. from Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach hotel at Uluniu Ave. FREE, outdoors, casual, seating on the grass; beach chairs, mats, etc. allowed. Cameras welcome. Attended by kamaaina (local residents) and malihini (visitors) alike. Presented by Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa, Hawaii Tourism Authority, City & County of Honolulu and Waikiki Improvement Association.

Willie K. Willie K will be performing at Blue Note Hawaii with 2 shows nightly at 6:30pm & 9:00pm. Ike Hana II. The second of two finale concerts featuring a different program from our resident guest artists: ASK Dance Company (Malaysia), Dancers of Damelahamid (British Columbia), and Halau Hula Ka Noeau (Honolulu).
ASK Dance Company A professional, award-winning dance collective from Malaysia built upon the philosophy “that to be alive, one must continuously learn, and thus be unafraid to ASK pertinent questions.” Incorporating traditional and contemporary genres of dance, ASK features outstanding dancers and choreographers and strives to play a significant role in bridging innumerable boundaries and breaking glass ceilings nationally and internationally.
Dancers of Damelahamid an Indigenous dance company from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia celebrating the diversity and depth of the many beautiful Indigenous cultures across Canada. Through dramatic dance, captivating narrative, intricately carved masks, and elaborate regalia the Dancers of Damelahamid transform time and space, bridging the ancient with a living tradition.
Halau Hula Ka Noeau Halau Hula Ka Noeau, under the direction of Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang, is an award-winning halau hula built on the philosophy that “the ‘Art of Hula’ expresses all we see, hear, smell, taste, touch, and feel.” Dedicated to performing traditional hula styles, particularly a style called hula kui, Hālau Hula Ka Noeau has been a driving force in promoting hula at an academic and artistic level with educational lectures, hula production, and performances in Hawaii and throughout North America and Asia.

Na Pali Challenge

Na Pali Challenge. Each year paddlers from the Hawaiian Islands and abroad gather on Kaua’i for this unique race. It is an opportunity for wahine and kane to come together and race down the enchanting Na Pali Coast. Each team consists of 6 wahine and 6 kane. The two teams take turns in the canoe, making water changes every 30 minutes. The race begins at Hanalei Bay and will end outside Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor. The course is 36 miles long and runs along some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. http://www.koapaddler.org/

The Hanalei community center is easy to find.  In Hanalei, a block past the shopping center, turn towards the mountains at Malolo Rd.  A small Hanalei Community Center sign is on the edge of Waioli Park soccer fields.  Go 20 yards, turn left into the gravel parking area.  The concert is in the brown building – Pohai Aloha (Circle of Aloha).

Endangered birds such as the Hawaiian stilt, Hawaiian coot, Hawaiian duck, Kolea (golden plover), and nene (Hawaiian goose), Pueo (Hawaiian owl) make their homes here.

Heiva I Kauai 2019. This is a 2 day dance, drumming and music competition and exhibition which showcases Tahitian and Polynesian cultures. Competitors enter solo and group dance categories and win prizes for excellence. Vendors sell crafts, gifts and food. Cultural practices of lauhala and coconut weaving, Polynesian carving and fireknife dancing, shell craft, and lomilomi massage are demonstrated. The event provides a venue for the next generation of Polynesian entertainers to gain performance experience. The event helps preserve and perpetuate Tahitian language, history, ledgends, music drumming and dancing. Audience participation is encouraged in coconut husking and Tahitian dace contests.
