Volcano Village Art Studio Weekend
November 29, 2019 – December 01, 2019:
Volcano Village Art Studio Weekend. Over Thanksgiving weekend the Volcano Village Artists Hui will host their 33rd annual Art Studio Weekend. Visitors are invited to meet the artists in their studios, and see artworks in a wide variety of media. Pottery, hand blown art glass, hand tooled metal, and fiber art as well as photographs, paintings, drawings and prints will be on display and available for purchase. All are Made in Hawaii. New this year, there will be demonstrations of art making at each of the studios on Sunday, December 1st. These will include everything from clay mask & tile techniques and “make & take” earrings, to watercolor painting, metal tooling, hot metal forging, and more. A special drawing for pieces contributed by the artists will be held on the last day of the event. This concert will ‘Tune your world to Aloha’! Award winning concert artists Doug & Sandy McMaster have 11 CDs to perpetuate the knowledge and experience of the endangered artform of traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele. Guided by the kupuna (elders), they have dedicated their lives to continuing the family tradition of slack key music.
The Hanalei community center is easy to find. In Hanalei, a block past the shopping center, turn towards the mountains at Malolo Rd. A small Hanalei Community Center sign is on the edge of Waioli Park soccer fields. Go 20 yards, turn left into the gravel parking area. The concert is in the brown building – Pohai Aloha (Circle of Aloha).

Accessible and Family Friendly Facility: This facility is accessible to all ages and abilities and is family friendly with nice grassy area and lanai for parents to take restless children during the concert and intermission. Endangered birds such as the Hawaiian stilt, Hawaiian coot, Hawaiian duck, Kolea (golden plover), and nene (Hawaiian goose), Pueo (Hawaiian owl) make their homes here.

Eric Gilliom – White Hawaiian. McCoy Studio Theater; 7:30 pm Actor/musician Eric Gilliom stars in an original one-man theatrical show, “White Hawaiian,” co-created by writer/director Brian Kohne (Kuleana). This one man show represents the first collaboration between the pair since “Get A Job,” an award-winning comedy produced entirely on Maui in 2010. Music lovers may remember their previous work as co-producers of the Barefoot Natives with Uncle Willie K, which resulted in two award-winning CDs and hysterical sold-out shows in the islands and beyond. Eric Gilliom explores identity through the lens of Hawaiian history, contemporary culture, and family, and this is certainly one show you do not want to miss! Maui’s Eric Gilliom is a recording artist and star of stage and screen, having appeared in movies, TV, on Broadway, and in concert venues throughout the country. He’s performed alongside legends including Willie K, Mick Fleetwood, and Jamie Foxx, and descends from a family of entertainers. “White Hawaiian” is an original one-man show co-writen by long-time collaborator Brian Kohne (Kuleana, Get A Job), and promises to be an evening of storytelling and hysterics audiences will not soon forget. Old-school members welcome the new-generation talent of drummer Aston Barrett Jr., Fams’ multi-talented son and nephew of Wailers co-founder and innovative drummer Carlton “Carly” Barrett. Familyman Barrett is heralded as a musical genius, was named as one of the most influential bass players of all times, and received the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from Bass Player magazine. Since 1974, Bob Marley & The Wailers have recorded, toured, and performed before millions of fans in multiple countries. They have claim to more than 250,000 Bob Marley & The Wailers records sold since the early 70s, including 1977’s Exodus, declared Best Album of the Century in 1999 by Time Magazine. The BBC named “One Love” Song of the Millennium that same year. Turkey Trot

Turkey Trot. Every Thanksgiving VIRR hosts a run up in Kula at Rice park called the Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot is a unique race where the winners are the runners who are closest to guessing their time in the 16 mile or 8 mile runs, not who crosses the finish line first. No timing devices are allowed.. no cheating … Start: 8 Mile Starts at 8:00am, 16 Mile Starts at 7:00am. Course: Starts and finishes at Rice Park in the parking area off of Lower Kula Rd. Distance: 8 Mile out and back and 16 Mile which is the 8 mile out and back twice. We will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items for the Maui Food Bank.
