King Kamehameha Day in Hilo. Events will be at Moku Ola, Coconut Island, right off Bayfront Drive next to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. The festival kicks off at 9 a.m. with the opening ceremony, followed by a conch shell blowing contest for all ages. Enjoy traditional Hawaiian music with hula by various halau (hula schools). The festival will have traditional arts and crafts and food. The closing ceremony is at 4:30 p.m. This is a family-friendly event. King Kamehameha Day in Kohala
Tuesday, June 11:
King Kamehameha Day in Kohala. North Kohala is a very special place to celebrate this annual Hawaiian holiday. Kamehameha I was born in North Kohala, where residents played a prominent role in saving his life as an infant. Events start at 7 a.m. at the King Kamehameha Statue, located at 55-3415 Akoni Pule Hwy, in Kapa`au, with a 25-foot long floral lei draping. The parade starts at 9 a.m., in Hawi, going northeast to the statue in Kapa`au and back to Kamehameha Park. The final event is a community celebration, or ho`olaulea, in Kamehameha Park from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. with hula, traditional music, local food, and arts and crafts. Puna Chicks! – Another Night of Comedy! These three ladies will tickle your funny bone and give you a dose of East Hawaii comedy. Sherri Carden, the Puna Princess will share everything you wanted to know about recycling, but were afraid to ask. Angie Libadisos, the Puna Tita, is a local actor, comedienne, singer-songwriter, environmentalist, mother, grandma, great-grandma who thinks she is always learning something new… and she usually shares too much! Hula Arts at Kilauea – Sunset Hula. Featuring Halau Kahula `O Nawahine Noho Puukapu under the direction of kumu hula Ana Nawahine Kahoopii. This inspired outdoor presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near VAC Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The audience is encouraged to bring sitting mat and sun/rain gear. 6:00 p.m. All events are free (donations welcome); park entrance fees apply. Kokua Kailua Hulihe`e Palace Concert Series & Village Stroll. One Sunday each month from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Ali`i Drive along scenic Kailua Bay in Kailua-Kona becomes a festive pedestrian-only walkway. Enjoy music, artists, merchants and restaurants. At 4 p.m., there is a free Hawaiian music concert on the lawn at Hulihe`e Palace. Bring your own mat or chair and they will be checked for free while you stroll Ali`i Drive, Kailua Village (Kona).
