Fee-Free Day: National Public Lands Day – Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. NPLD is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. Come to Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park and help ensure the future of the Hawaiian rainforest. Volunteers will help remove invasive, non-native plants that prevent native plants from growing. Meet at Kilauea Visitor Center. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and long pants. Bring a hat, rain gear, day pack, snacks and water. Gloves and tools are provided. No advance registration is required. Ali`i Drive along scenic Kailua Bay in Kailua-Kona becomes a festive pedestrian-only walkway from 1 to 6 p.m. Enjoy music, artists, merchants and restaurants. Waimea Ho`olaulea. A relaxing day in beautiful Waimea, the ho`olaulea begins with community olelo Hawai`i by local keiki. Taiko drummers “sound the alarm” and draw people in from the Parade. The Craft Tent is filled with clothing, purses, jewelry, lauhala products. Delicious food and snacks can be found by following your nose around Waimea Park. The sellout booth is always the fried fish booth, kole, and menpachi. Talk story, and enjoy the beautiful music and occasional hula dancer. A family friendly event. Hula Kahiko Performance. Hula halau from across Hawai`i and beyond perform in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, located just a short walking distance from the Volcano Art Gallery in Ka`auea. 10:30 a.m. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mat. Waimea 43rd Annual Paniolo Parade

Waimea 43rd Annual Paniolo Parade. The parade showcases Hawai`i Island’s paniolo, the art of pa`u, the art of hula, oli, olelo, the royal society Ahahui Ka`ahumanu Waimea Chapter. Participants include local schools, church groups, hula halau, businesses, and more, in this annual Paniolo Parade. Many of the paniolo and pa`u riders are true paniolo; they all own ranches, work and live the way of paniolo as their kupuna, and teach younger generations, thus perpetuating the culture. Some of the pa`u riders are 5th generation who live the lifestyle. This event provides venues for practitioners to share their skills and knowledge of the culture. It also provides venues for artisans to display and sell their work. Hawai`i Island Festival of Birds

Hawai`i Island Festival of Birds. The program will include expert guest speakers, a trade show for outdoor and birding equipment, a children’s corner, bird-themed arts and crafts fair, photography workshop, a birding film festival, time to interact with Hawai`i Island naturalists and bird experts, and guided field trips on land and sea. Friday and Sunday activities include guided birdwatching field trips along the newly created Hawai`i Island Coast to Coast Birding Trail, and guided boat trips out of Honokohau Harbor to watch seabirds. The 90-mile Trail crosses Hawai`i Island from Kona on the west coast to Hilo on the east coast, from rainforest to lava plains. While birds will be the focal points, elements of Hawai`i Island`s unique plants and trees, geology, history and of course, scenic viewpoints will also be highlighted. Niaulani Nature Walk

Niaulani Nature Walk. A free, guided rain forest tour in Volcano. This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces visitors to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, and the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians.
