Hawaiian Sunset Saturdays

Hawaiian Sunset Saturdays. On the last Saturday of every month, everyone’s invited to gather and celebrate Kona’s spectacular sunset with live Hawaiian music and beautiful hula performed by the dancers of Halau Kaeaikahelelani, under the direction of kumu hula Yuki Kaea Lyons and Lily Kahelelani Lyons Dudoit.
Bring lawn chair or beach mats and enjoy the evening as the sun begins its journey over the horizon. As Hawaiian Sunset Saturday comes to a close, attendees can extend the evening at one of many nearby restaurants.
Parking is available; coolers are not permitted.  

Hawaii Island Festival of Birds (4th Annual)

Hawaii Island Festival of Birds (4th Annual). Highlighting the migratory and accidental avian visitors that arrive in Hawaii each year, the 2019 HIFB theme is “Wanderers and Migrants-Hawaii’s Unique Avian Visitors.” The festival includes a reception and film festival Thursday, 10/24/19, guided birding excursions on land and sea, and the fun “Birds, Brews & Binos” bird fair Friday, 10/25/19. New in 2019 will be added education and focus on Papahanaumokuakea National Marine Monument. Beneficiaries are the Hawaii Wildlife Center and The Hawaii Island Coast to Coast Birding Trail. Intro to Botanical Art, Tropical Style! Intro to Botanical Art, Tropical Style! Learn the basics for creating botanical illustrations from professional botanist, botanical illustrator, and teacher, Dr. Linda Ann Vorobik. Linda, through demonstrations and lectures, introduces participants to drawing skills, parts of the plant, what botanical illustration is when defined precisely, and watercolor techniques as used for painting plant portraits. The first morning of the workshop begins with introductions and demonstrations followed by supervised drawing to create pencil drafts for watercolors; later in the morning pen & ink supplies are described and techniques are demonstrated. The afternoon consists of lecture/demonstrations on watercolor supplies and techniques followed by drawing and painting time. The second morning will begin with more demonstrations followed by supervised drawing and painting. The workshop closes with a friendly critique of works produced. All skill levels are welcome: accomplished artists can increase their knowledge of botany and skilled botanists learn drawing and painting techniques. Christian Sands Trio Christian Sands—Jazz Pianist. Christian Sands is currently one of the most in-demand pianists working in jazz. He will perform at the Kahilu Theatre on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 7 pm. Accompanying him on stage will be bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Jerome Jennings.
In the last few years Sands has toured around the world as a bandleader and recently appeared as a sideman on records by Christian McBride and Gregory Porter. Lorenzo’s Army. Kahilu Theatre is opening up a dance floor in the extended Main Stage/Mike Luce Studio (MLS) as part of the “Dance Night at Kahilu” series, featuring live music with local jam band Lorenzo’s Army Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 7pm. Lorenzo’s Army has been playing music on the Big Island for 20 years at well-known local hotspots, music clubs, and private events. The band specializes in “good time music for the masses” covering everything from Etta James to Bruno Mars with strong grooves and powerful harmonies.
