Hula Kahiko Performance

Saturday, August 15:
Hula Kahiko Performance. Hula halau from across Hawai`i and beyond have been invited to perform in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, located just a short walking distance from the Volcano Art Gallery in Ka`auea. 10:30 a.m. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mat. The event is free, park fees apply. Held in conjunction with the Hula Kahiko performances, enjoy a display of “Na Mea Hula” (all things hula). Visitors share in a variety of instruments, implements and lei styles that play an integral role in the life of the hula practitioner. This memorable demonstration is hands-on and family friendly. Pu`ukohala Heiau National Historic Site’s Annual Cultural Festival – Kawaihae

Saturday & Sunday, August 15 & 16:
Pu`ukohala Heiau National Historic Site’s Annual Cultural Festival – Kawaihae. Experience over 20 arts and craft workshops and demonstrations, as well as local musicians playing songs of Hawai`i. On Saturday, enjoy special sunrise cultural ceremonies 6 to 9:30 a.m., with festivities continuing until 3 p.m. On Sunday, festivities will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Located about a mile south of Kawaihae on the Kohala Coast. Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. An unforgettable week of famous deep-sea fishing in Kona awaits anglers from around the world as teams gather for prized Pacific blue marlin and a chance of capturing the HIBT’s prestigious Governor’s trophy. Obon Dance & Festival. The Obon tradition was brought to Hawai`i by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making.
