Hawai`i Honey Festival. Taste and judge your favorite honey sent in from beekeepers throughout the Hawaiian islands. Winning honeys will get recognition and awarded. Festivities at the event include the “People’s Choice” Honey Tasting, honey bee educational events, children’s activities, “ono” food, agricultural demonstrations, observation hives, music, and many bee-related crafts & vendors. Ukulele Festival. The Festival this year is dedicated to Dennis Kamakahi – a many time guest of the Institute. Local musicians will offer classes and school shows, in addition to four evening concerts (one free and three ticketed), reaching a projected 4,000 school children in North Hawai`i. The free opening concert includes an open invitation to the community to join the masters on stage, in the popular “Kanikapila” event. Featuring Ledward Kaapana & Benny Chong, Friday; Jeff Peterson & Nathan Aweau, Saturday. The Finale concert will feature Spanish and Classical guitar player Vincenzo Martinelli. Kokua Kailua Hulihe`e Palace Concert Series & Village Stroll. Ali`i Drive along scenic Kailua Bay in Kailua-Kona becomes a festive pedestrian-only walkway from 1 to 6 p.m. Enjoy music, artists, merchants and restaurants. At 4 p.m., there is a free Hawaiian music concert on the lawn at Hulihe`e Palace. Bring your own mat or chair and they will be checked for free while you stroll Ali`i Drive, Kailua Village (Kona). Hula Kahiko Informance: Na kumu hula Pelehonuamea Harman and Kekoa Harman with Halau I ka Leo Ola o Na Mamo . Hula halau from across Hawai`i and beyond have been invited to perform in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, located just a short walking distance from the Volcano Art Gallery in an area known as Ka`auea. 10:30 a.m. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mat. Conquering the Sun. Maui’s next feat is to stop the Sun Goddess La from moving so quickly across the sky. His mother, Hina, complains that her kapa for the luau will not dry because the days are so short. With the help of his sister, Keahi, and others they meet along the way, Maui climbs to the top of the mountain and lassoes La with a rope made of their hair.
