Kona Marathon and Family Fun Runs

June 14 – 22:
Kona Marathon and Family Fun Runs. Since its debut in 1994, this event has become Kona’s premier road race, with four great family races – marathon, half-marathon, and 5-K and 10-K runs. All four events start at Keauhou Shopping Center, with the marathon at 5:30 a.m., the half marathon at 6 a.m., the 10K at 6:45 a.m. and the 5K at 6:50 a.m. The courses go along Ali`i Drive, which is the road along the scenic shoreline of the Pacific Ocean, with beautiful views of crashing waves and mountains. All events finish at Sheraton Kona at Keauhou Bay, 78-6831 Ali`i Dr., Keauhou. King Kamehameha Day in Kohala

Wednesday, June 11:
King Kamehameha Day in Kohala. A day full of events honoring Kamehameha I, the chief who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1795. Kamehameha Day is recognized as a state holiday throughout Hawai`i, but North Kohala is a very special place to celebrate. Kamehameha I was born in North Kohala, where residents played a prominent role in saving his life as an infant. Events start at 8 a.m. at the King Kamehameha Statue in Kapa`au with a 25-foot long floral lei draping. Come early for best viewing. The parade starts at 9 a.m. in Hawi, going northeast to the statue in Kapa`au and back to Kamehameha Park. The final event is a ho`olaulea in Kamehameha Park from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with hula, traditional music, local food, and arts and crafts. Kokua Kailua Hulihe`e Palace Concert Series & Village Stroll. Ali`i Drive along scenic Kailua Bay in Kailua-Kona becomes a festive pedestrian-only walkway from 1 to 6 p.m. Enjoy music, artists, merchants and restaurants. At 4 p.m., there is a free Hawaiian music concert on the lawn at Hulihe`e Palace. Bring your own mat or chair and they will be checked for free while you stroll Ali`i Drive, Kailua Village (Kona). Hawaiian Islands Land Trust: Talk Story on the Land – McCandless Ranch, Big Island. Keith Unger will lead participants to the flight pens of the endangered Alala and lead a discussion of the Alala in Hawai`i. This endangered bird no longer exists in the wild although captive populations are doing well. McCandless Ranch was the site of the last known wild crows in Hawai`i. Big Island Jazz and Blues Festival. A wonderful celebration of music, the experience begins on Friday with a VIP meet and greet at the Kaunaoa Bar & Grill, followed by the festival main event on Saturday on the North Pointe Luau Grounds. The festival line-up includes performances by Grammy Award winner Skip Martin, The Iguanas from New Orleans, and saxophone legend Donald Harrison.
