Ohana Day: Filipino Culture

Ohana Day:  Filipino Culture.  Join the museum and the St. Raphael Filipino Catholic Club on Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 10am-1pm (first Saturday ‘Ohana Day). Experience food, costume, dance, music, demonstrations and exhibits on this community day held once a month at the Kaua’i Museum. Slack Key Guitar Concerts

Sunday Afternoons: 
Slack Key Guitar Concerts.  Traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and `ukulele concerts.  January 6 – Legends of Slack Key; January 13 – From Mountain to Sea; January 20 – Circle of Life; January 27 – Hawai`i’s Cowboy Music.  Tickets: $20 ($15 keiki/seniors).  The concerts are nahenahe – soft and sweet.  Slack key guitar and `ukulele in the real old style.  All traditional music with songs and stories of the islands, telling the history of this Hawaiian musical art form.  A portion of the proceeds supports the Hale Halawai Ohana O Hanalei.  Hanalei Family Community Center.  3:00 p.m.  For information and reservations call (808) 826-1469 or visit www.mcmasterslackkey.com.

A Kauai Christmas Hula Concert.  Kumu Hula Leilani Rivera Low and Halau Hula o Leilani invite everyone to celebrate the holidays Hawaiian style with beautiful music, hula, Maori, and Tahitian dances. Over 75 keiki and adult dancers dressed in colorful costumes and lei dance to lively Hawaiian Christmas songs and vibrant Tahitian drums. Guests from Niihau share their distinctive harmonies and Niihau dialect in mele composed by Mama Ane Kanahele and dedicated to the Lord. Ho’olaule’a.  In the big field at Waipa. Food and craft booths, entertainment, contests and competitions, keiki activities, tours, and workshops…all about kalo. Featuring hands-on workshops, educational displays, biggest kalo competition, a cooking contest, lo`i tours, and keiki kalo art contest.  Fabulous entertainment will include live music and presentations throughout the day.  10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Adults $3, Keiki under 12 $1.

Waipa Kalo Festival
