2012 Cycle to the Sun

2012 Cycle to the Sun.  Cyclists from around the world compete in a legendary 36 mile uphill race on Maui from beachside Paia to the 10,000 foot summit of Haleakala.  The race, often described as the planet’s longest, steepest race course, starts at 6:30 a.m. Riders can register individually or as a three person relay team. Entry fee is $200 for individual race, or $300 for three person relay team. $25 late fee for entries after August 6. Musical Voices Maui Presents “The Creation”

Musical Voices Maui Presents “The Creation”.  As part of the Maui Masterworks Festival 2012, Musical Voices Maui presents “The Creation” by Franz Josef Haydn. He relentlessly worked on this oratorio just before the turn of the 19th century and it is considered his greatest work.  Conducted by Robert E. Summer Soul Concert with The Shirelles & The Manhattans.  Rock-and-Roll Hall of Famers, The Shirelles were the first major female vocal group of the rock era, defining the so-called girl group sound with their soft, sweet harmonies and yearning innocence. Their music was a blend of pop and R&B that appealed to listeners across the board. The Mahattans are R&B trailblazers who have achieved career longevity by adapting their style to fit changing times. Formed in the 60s as a doo wop-influenced R&B quintet, The Manhattans reinvented themselves in the 70s as smooth soul balladeers. Wild Dolphin Sand Sculpture Contest

Saturday, August 11: 
Wild Dolphin Sand Sculpture Contest.  Free and open to all ages and all levels of sand sculpting experience. Work individually or as part of a family or group to create a sand sculpture in honor of wild dolphins. Prizes awarded to top entries in several categories.  All participants will receive a free dolphin poster and free dolphin guide. Some shovels and pails will be provided by Pacific Whale Foundation’s team, but all are urged to bring their own tools, if possible. Begins at 9 a.m. and continues to noon. Free registration on the morning of the contest at the north end of Keawakapu Beach on the sand by Sarento’s Restaurant. Judging 11:30 am to noon. Obon Dance & Festival

Obon Dance & Festival.  The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making.  Wailuku Hongwanji Mission, 1828 Vineyard St., Wailuku.
