HAPA – The Original Duo.  Reuniting after 17 years, the original duo of Barry Flanagan and Keli’i Kaneali’i bring back the groundbreaking sound that established the name HAPA as one of the most recognized names in Hawaiian music since their debut album hit the airwaves.
Meaning ‘half’ in Hawaiian, the name HAPA is inspired by the band’s two members – Keli’i Kaneali’i of South Pacific ancestry, and Barry Flanagan from New Jersey.
The group’s self-titled album, released in 1993, remains the #1 selling recording by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian music. The recording swept all six categories it was nominated for at the 1994 Hawai’i Music Awards. In 2007, the album was acknowledged by Honolulu Magazine as #31 of the 50 All-Time Greatest Hawaiian Recordings, with the original song Lei Pikake acknowledged as #32 in the follow-up 50 All-Time Greatest Songs issue.

Gary Clark Jr. began playing guitar at the age of 12. Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Clark played small gigs throughout his teens until he met promoter Clifford Antone, proprietor of the Austin music club Antone’s.   Soon after meeting Clifford, Clark began to play with other musical icons, including Jimmie Vaughan who, along with others in the Austin music community, helped Clark along his musical path. Gary Clark Jr. is best known for his fusion of blues, rock, and soul music with elements of hip hop.   Known as a prolific live performer, he has shared the stage with Eric Clapton, B. B. Through dramatic dance, captivating narrative, intricately carved masks, and elaborate regalia, the Dancers of Damelahamid transform time and space, to bridge the ancient with a living tradition.   The rich history of masked dance inspires a compelling performance, celebrating the diversity and time depth of the many beautiful aboriginal/First Nations cultures.   Don’t miss this special performance by an aboriginal dance company from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia.

Workshop with the Dancers of Damelahamid. The workshop will be held in Omori Room A. This movement-based workshop will experience different styles of Coastal First Nations songs.   The Dancers of Damelahamid will explain the cultural significance of the movement techniques as well as the importance of story and cultural knowledge in the dance form.   Through the use of songs, simple vocabulary will be taught in the Gitxsan language. Participants are asked to dress comfortably and wear moccasins, sneakers, or bare feet.   All levels of experience are welcome. COST:  $10 nonrefundable registration fee. Registered attendees for this workshop will have access to a $5 discount towards the purchase of a ticket to the Dancers of Damelahamid show on Friday, July 19. Where: Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot off Vineyard Street Distance: 10k, elevation is 780 feet gain and descent 5k, elevation is 300 feet gain and descent Course Description 10K : Starting at the Wailuku Municipal parking lot, runners follow Vineyard Street to Main Street up to the scenic Iao Valley State Park*. After the turn around, enjoy a rolling downhill back to Wailuku.
