Maui Matsuri Kickoff Event.  The 18th annual Maui Matsuri Festival shares all things Japanese with residents and visitors. The festival features four days of events; April 27, May 3, 4 and 5, held at various locations.    The free Kickoff Event will feature Taiko (Japanese drumming), Japanese classic and folk dancing, and coloring contest for the kids.  A community Bon Dance practice at the end of the evening welcomes participants to learn dances that will be shared again on May 4th and 5^th at the UH Maui College Campus.  Queen Ka`ahumanu Center, 275 W. Saturday, April 21: 
Mahalo Willie K Benefit Concert.  Maui Tribe Productions and the ‘Ohana and Friends of Willie K are presenting benefit concerts on three islands to help compensate for the lost income and mounting health care expenses resulting from Willie K’s recent diagnosis of lung cancer.  Born Willie Kahaiali’i, Uncle Willie K has been performing at home in Hawai`i and across the world for all of his life. Performing alongside some of the industry’s most celebrated artists, the eclectic artist made his mark with a brand of dynamic stage performances and a diverse repertoire of music that span across time, language, and continents.  This will be a day of celebration, jam packed with awesome music including the Kahaiali`i Brothers, KB the Next Generation, Kalani Pe’a, Pono (Kaleo Phillips, Josh Kahula, and Pi`ilani Arias), Jesse Tanoue, Ata Demasco, Arlie Asiu, and Pound4Pound, along with ono food and free keiki fun.  Maui Arts & Cultural Center, A&B Amphitheater, One Cameron Way, Kahului.  1 to 8 p.m., gates open at 12 noon.  Premium parking in the MACC main lot available via the box office. Thursday, April 19: 
Artist 2 Artist:  Henry Kapono and Jerry Santos.  Henry Kapono is a performer who has it all – vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, thrilling performer, audience favorite—and multiple honors and awards, including a Grammy nomination. He has taken home numerous Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Album & Rock Album of the Year. Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival.  Festivities in Ka`anapali include open stage performances on Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., two days of ho`olaule`a pageants with six presentations each night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., kanikapila jam sessions for the public hosted by master steel guitar players each night at 9:30 p.m., steel guitar workshops on Saturday, cultural activities, a silent auction, and vintage steel guitar exhibit courtesy of Geri Valdriz. Maui County Agricultural Festival.  Maui’s prime event to raise awareness about Maui agriculture while invigorating Maui agriculture. Starry Night Cinema:  The LEGO Batman Movie.  Bring a low-back beach chair and/or a blanket and spread out on the lawn for a special screening of “The LEGO Batman Movie!” Come early and enjoy preshow entertainment and an art activity for the kids prior to the film. Brother Noland – His Songs, His Stories, His Style.  Brother Noland has deeply influenced contemporary Hawaiian music and is widely considered as the “Father of Jawaiian Music.” Fluid in both slack key and standard guitar tunings, Brother Noland goes wherever the music carries him. Brother Noland is popular for his unique interpretations of songs, yet remains respectful of traditional Hawaiian music and culture. Noland is most famous for his original song, “Coconut Girl,” which birthed the “Jawaiian” contemporary style music. He has won numerous Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, including Best Reggae Album, and his music is featured in several movies, including “Pineapple Express” and “Snakes on a Plane.” He is regularly featured in Slack Key Guitar festivals around the islands.
