Maui Taiko 20th Anniversary Concert. Twenty years ago, Maui Taiko was formed by the descendants of Japanese immigrants in the hopes of perpetuating a centuries-old drumming tradition. Now blossomed into a performance troupe that entertains thousands of residents and visitors on Maui annually, the group invites you to celebrate with them and their friends: Uneme Daiko (Koriyama, Japan), Marco Leinhard –Taikoza (New York), Nakayama & Maui Minyo Kai (Maui), and nationally acclaimed, San Jose Taiko. Lana`i’s 25th Annual Pineapple Festival. Scheduled performers include award-winning Hawaiian entertainers Weldon Kekauoha and Anuhea, along with hula and Tahitian dancers and local crafters displaying their wares. There also will be numerous prize giveaways throughout the day. And what would a Pineapple Festival be without pineapple? Be sure to come hungry, because there will be several pineapple eating contests and pineapple cooking competitions to tempt your taste buds, along with other food booths showcasing the tastiest island eats. Throughout the Month of July:
Obon Dance & Festival. The Obon tradition was brought to Hawai`i by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. Ki Ho`alu Festival
Sunday, June 25:
Ki Ho`alu Festival. An all-star lineup including some of Hawai`i’s best slack key guitar players will perform a full afternoon of melodious Hawaiian music. Kī Hō`alu, translating literally from the Hawaiian as “loosen the key,” indicating the tuning in slack key guitar technique, is a musical tradition dating back to 19th century paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) who played around the campfire after completing a day of ranch work. Artists performing in the festival this year include Kevin & Ikaika Brown, Stephen Inglis, Blayne Asing, Aja Gample, Ho’okena, George Kuo, George Kahumoku & Friends, Brother Noland, Paul Togioka, Ian O’Sullivan, Kamuela Kahoano, Danny Carvalho, Donald Kaulia, Dwight Kanae, Wayne Johnson, and Makana. MAMo at the MACC – Wearable Art Show

MAMo at the MACC – Wearable Art Show. A component of the Maoli Arts Movement, the wearable art show celebrates Hawaiian design in fabric and clothing, specifically in terms of cultural motif, in a way that makes it more than just a runway fashion show. Many traditional Hawaiian patterns and designs, in kapa and weaving, weaponry and tools, tattoo and adornment, take their visual clues from nature. This fashion event is definitely not a typical fashion show. VIP ticketholders get exclusive access to the trunk show before the performance; all other ticketholders are invited to visit the trunk show at the conclusion of the program. Maui Humane Society’s Beach Buddies Volunteer Program. Do you miss having a dog to spend your day with? Visitors and residents can sign up to take a homeless dog out for the day from the Maui Humane Society animal shelter. The shelter is easy to find as it is conveniently located in Pu`unene (central Maui) on Mokulele Hwy., between Kihei/Wailea and Kahului. Program participants will pick “their dog” up at 10 a.m. and bring them back no later than 3 p.m. MHS provides all of the supplies, you just provide the fun!
