Obon Dance & Festival
Throughout the Month of June:
Obon Dance & Festival. The Obon tradition was brought to Hawai`i by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. Ka Hula Piko Hula Festival – A celebration of the birth of hula. According to Moloka`i tradition, the art of Hula began on the island of Moloka`i in the district of Ka`ana. A full day filled with Hawaiian and local craft booths, `ono food, door prize giveaways, a silent auction and the official Moloka`i Ka Hula Piko t-shirt. Entertainment by various Moloka`i groups and Hula Halau. Kualapu`u Recreation Center, 1 Uwao St., Ho`olehua, Island of Moloka`i. Head West past the airport along Maunaloa Hwy. Exhibit – Piero Resta – Illuminatus. Schaefer International Gallery; Tue – Sun 10am – 5 pm (Also open before select Castle Theater shows and during intermission). This retrospective exhibition honors an artist whose life’s work was infused with passion and spiritual transcendence within natural and mythological worlds. Piero Resta’s artistic career was immersed in the alchemy of philosophy, science, poetry, and experimentation. The selection of paintings, sculpture, and personal archives on display reveals the axial relationship of his Italian heritage and influences of ancient traditions and architecture, integrated with the primitive vibrant life force of his home in Kaupo, Maui. This exhibition celebrates the legacy left by a man who embraced the world as a celestial navigator and willingly shared his grace for all to discover. FREE Admission!
