Iao Valley 10K. Enjoy this run through the scenic Iao Valley. Course starts at the Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot off of Vineyard Street, between Church Street and Market Street. Follows Vineyard Street up to Main Street, and into scenic Iao Valley State Park, with a long, rolling, downhill back to Wailuku. Run facing traffic to be safe. Helping Paws Visitor Volunteer Program

Helping Paws Visitor Volunteer Program. Do you miss your pet when traveling? Visitors can offer a “helping paw” to homeless animals at the Maui Humane Society shelter, located in Pu`unene (central Maui), on Mokulele Hwy. between Kihei and Kahului. 1 to 3 p.m. Help with such activities as walking dogs, bathing puppies, brushing cats, or playing with puppies and kittens. Arrive by 1 p.m. and wear close-toed shoes and comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. For Maui visitors only. Children age 10 to 17 are welcome when accompanied by a supervising adult for the duration. Advance reservations required. Annual Makawao Paniolo Parade
Saturday, July 2:
Annual Makawao Paniolo Parade. Enjoy this colorful Hawaiian style small town Wild West parade in Makawao, along Makawao and Baldwin Avenues. Road closures for the parade generally begin at 8:30 a.m., so plan accordingly. 8:45 a.m. – Stick Horse Race (everyone is welcome to participate); 9 to 11 a.m. – Parade. There will be no parking in town. Arrive early to park at Eddie Tam Community Center or at the Oskie Rice Arena, in Olinda, which has free shuttle service from 7 to 9 a.m., and back from the parade starting at 11:30 a.m. For information call (808) 283-2741.

Obon Dance & Festival. The Obon tradition was brought to Hawai`i by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making.
