Makawao Town Independence Day Paniolo Parade. This year’s theme is “Celebrate the Paniolo”. Stick Horses Race at 8:45 a.m., Parade begins at 9:00 a.m. Experience this colorful Hawaiian style wild west parade, complete with rodeo royalty, beauty queens, foliage draped pa’u riders, classic cars, decked-out cowboys & cowgirls, music & floats. No parking in town. Roads will be closed. Park at the Oski Rice Arena Rodeo Grounds on Olinda Road and take the free shuttle 7 – 9 a.m., and back at 11:30 a.m. For information call (808) 572-9565.

Helping Paws Visitor Volunteer Program

Every Wednesday and Thursday:
Helping Paws Visitor Volunteer Program. Do you miss your pet when traveling? Visitors can offer a “helping paw” to homeless animals at the Maui Humane Society shelter, located in Pu`unene (central Maui), on Mokulele Hwy. between Kihei and Kahului. 1 to 3 p.m. Help with such activities as walking dogs, bathing puppies, brushing cats, or playing with puppies and kittens. Arrive by 1 p.m. and wear close-toed shoes and comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. For Maui visitors only. Children age 10 to 17 are welcome when accompanied by a supervising adult for the duration. Advance reservations required. Fourth of July Fireworks and Concert in the Park. Stroll historic Lahaina and enjoy holiday specials in many ocean view restaurants and town shops. For an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration, listen to a variety of bands play in a free concert on the oceanfront Lahaina Library Lawn, Front Street, starting at 5 p.m. A fireworks display lighting the night sky over Lahaina is scheduled for 8 p.m. along Front Street.
