North Kohala Kamehameha Day Celebration. Every June 11th, thousands of people gather on the northern tip of the Big Island of Hawai`i to honor Kamehameha I, the chief who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1795. Lei Draping at the statue of King Kamehameha in Kapa`au (8 a.m.), and a traditional Pa`u Parade (11 a.m.), with horses and riders adorned in flowers and colors representing each Hawaiian Island. The parade will travel from downtown Hawi to Kamehameha Park in Kapa`au. There will also be a Ho`olaule`a (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at Kamehameha Park. Enjoy local food, see masters create traditional arts and crafts, watch beautiful hula dancers and listen to award-winning Hawaiian musicians.
