DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 11: \nKing Kamehameha Day in Kohala. A day full of events honoring Kamehameha I\, the chief who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1795. Kamehameha Day is recognized as a state holiday throughout Hawai`i\, but North Kohala is a very special place to celebrate. Kamehameha I was born in North Kohala\, where residents played a prominent role in saving his life as an infant. Events start at 8 a.m. at the King Kamehameha Statue in Kapa`au with a 25-foot long floral lei draping. Come early for best viewing. The parade starts at 9 a.m. in Hawi\, going northeast to the statue in Kapa`au and back to Kamehameha Park. The final event is a ho`olaulea in Kamehameha Park from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.\, with hula\, traditional music\, local food\, and arts and crafts.
