As part of its New Year’s tradition\, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (JCCH) will celebrate 2020 with the 27th Annual New Year’s Ohana Festival. The Festival will feature foods from the Japanese kenjin kai (prefectural clubs)\, entertainment including taiko performances\, Japanese dance\, and the Royal Hawaiian Band. Martial arts and other cultural demonstrations to experience will include kimono dressing\, bonsai\, bunka shishu (embroidery)\, calligraphy\, go\, kumihimo (braiding)\, origami\, shippoyaki (enameling)\, mochi pounding\, a tea ceremony and blessings from Shinto shrines. The JCCH campus will also feature a craft fair\, and a scavenger hunt in the Okage Sama De historical exhibit. There will be a variety of children’s games to play throughout the day on the Moiliili field. Free parking will be available at the UH parking structure with complimentary shuttle service to and from the festival. Festival is presented by Hawaii Tourism\, Edward Enterprises\, Inc. and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Conceptualized in the ‘90s as a ‘revolving band\,’ HSB has included the musical synergy of more than 50 musicians and producers over the course of three albums! In the early ’90s\, Hawaiian Style Band\, led by Bryan Kessler and Wade Cambern\, redefined contemporary Hawaiian music. The addition of Grammy-nominated and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winner Robi Kahakalau completed the collection of distinctive vocal harmony of Hawaiian Style Band. They offered a fresh musical perspective on local culture with original compositions about living Hawaiian style—about island romance\, talking story\, ‘ohana\, and sovereignty. This past year we had between 600-700 folks visit our wee village to participate in mochi pounding and other activities. Come and join the fun on Saturday\, Dec. 28th\, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. making traditional rice cakes the “old-fashioned” way. Everyone takes their turn at pounding the delicious sticky rice for good luck. Fire building starts at 7 a.m. to steam the rice. Hearty local style lunch for $5. (100-yd & 200-yd events)\nA Unique Kona Running Event\nLargest Kona Running Event\nThe Jingle Bell Beach Run began in December of 2005 in an effort to kick off Christmas week with a bang! The idea blossomed from the creative mind of Rani “The RoadRunner” (Tanimoto) Henderson\, who wanted to give the run a Christmas twist. With only a week to turn her idea into reality\, the creation became an instant hit with the first annual Jingle Bell Beach Run held on December 18\, 2005!\nOne thing Henderson strived for was to keep this run simple and fun. With that in mind\, and together with the help of her husband Penn\, it has grown over the last few years into a first-class event – one that participants remember\, enjoy\, and return year after year for more! In addition\, awards are given out to the top overall finishers as well as the top three best dressed Christmas costumes. Raffle prizes follow the awards\, so it’s very hard for one to go home empty handed! | Registration Opens August 1st for the 2019 Event |\nSanta’s Keiki Dash\nA fun\, free event for kids 6 & under. Parents are welcome to accompany their children. Non-competitive\, no awards\, just lots of fun with plenty of goodies! Features a 100-yard dash (4 & under – 1x lap around sand volleyball court)\, and a 200-yard dash (5-6 years – 2x laps around sand volleyball court). Keiki Dash starts at 8:30\, following the completion of the Jingle Bell Beach Run 5k event. Free registration on race morning at the start/finish area (Coconut Grove).
