DESCRIPTION:January 12\, 2020:\nNew Year’s Ohana Festival. As part of its New Year’s tradition\, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (JCCH) will celebrate 2020 with the 27th Annual New Year’s Ohana Festival. The Festival will feature foods from the Japanese kenjin kai (prefectural clubs)\, entertainment including taiko performances\, Japanese dance\, and the Royal Hawaiian Band. Martial arts and other cultural demonstrations to experience will include kimono dressing\, bonsai\, bunka shishu (embroidery)\, calligraphy\, go\, kumihimo (braiding)\, origami\, shippoyaki (enameling)\, mochi pounding\, a tea ceremony and blessings from Shinto shrines. The JCCH campus will also feature a craft fair\, and a scavenger hunt in the Okage Sama De historical exhibit. There will be a variety of children’s games to play throughout the day on the Moiliili field. Free parking will be available at the UH parking structure with complimentary shuttle service to and from the festival. Festival is presented by Hawaii Tourism\, Edward Enterprises\, Inc. and the U.S. Census Bureau.

DESCRIPTION:December 28\, 2019:\nWailea Village Mochi Pounding (22nd Annual). Akiko’s over the years has become synonymous with MOCHI POUNDING. This will be our 22nd year. Started with 23 people\, mostly neighbors\, and now it has become a popular community and public event. This past year we had between 600-700 folks visit our wee village to participate in mochi pounding and other activities. Come and join the fun on Saturday\, Dec. 28th\, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. making traditional rice cakes the “old-fashioned” way. Everyone takes their turn at pounding the delicious sticky rice for good luck. Fire building starts at 7 a.m. to steam the rice. Hearty local style lunch for $5. New years crafts\, food vendors\, fortune telling\, massage\, I Ching readings\, floral arrangements\, plantation stories\, Okinawan taiko drumming\, Hawaiian entertainment & more. The concert will feature holiday favorites including Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson\, Silent Night featuring Michael Cripps\, COOK’s principal cellist\, Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24\, a rendition of the Ukranian Bell Carol as performed by the Trans Siberian Orchestra and more! And we’ll send you out singing as you join the orchestra in a sing-along medley of favorite Christmas carols. The Chamber Orchestra of Kona\, more familiarly known as “COOK\,” generally presents 4 pairs of concerts between September and May of each year. COOK is comprised of over 30 local musicians from all works of life including retired educators\, realtors\, medical professionals and even a professional musician or two!
