SUMMARY:Alii Sunday - Queen Kaahumanu
DESCRIPTION:March 15\, 2020:\nAlii Sunday – Queen Kaahumanu. Alii Sundays are among the many long and honored traditions of Kawaiahao Church\, which began about 1914. In the 1970’s our people were embarking on a tidal wave of change. In the midst of circumstance and sensing the urgency to unite Hawaii’s people and rekindle their strength and purpose in Ke Akua [God]\, the Reverend Dr. Abraham Akaka rejuvenated these services as part of the larger cultural awakening already taking place. He reminded us of the importance “to unite as the people of Hawaii and to recognize the leadership our Alii gave us as Christians.” We celebrate nine Alii Sundays which are held as part of a larger series of celebrations recognized by the Benevolent Royal Societies\, Alii Trusts and the Hawaiian Civic Clubs of which always occurs on Sundays or the Sunday just before the birthday of the Alii. Join us as we celebrate these Alii and the many blessings from Ke Akua together.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: "Musical Instruments: Sounds of the Asia Pacific"
DESCRIPTION:March 04\, 2020 – May 17\, 2020:\nExhibition: “Musical Instruments: Sounds of the Asia Pacific”. This exhibition features Asia Pacific musical instruments from the Ethno musicology Instrument Collection at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. The collection has been acquired over the past 70 years\, initially established by Professor Barbara B. Smith\, and continues today under the supervision of Professor Ricardo D. Trimillos. This collection is an invaluable resource for the community because the instruments are meant to be utilized rather than to be displayed as museum pieces. Many of the instruments in the collection are used in the various musical ensembles at the university including Indonesian gamelan (traditional ensemble comprised primarily of metallophones and gongs) and Japanese gagaku (ancient court music)\, as well as Hawaiian and Tahitian dance\, koto (Japanese zither)\, Chinese\, Korean\, Okinawan\, and Philippine ensembles. The collection is comprised of nearly 2\,500 instruments from across the globe. This exhibition is dedicated to Professor Barbara B. Smith as part of the year-long celebration of her 100th birthday. Gallery hours are weekdays from 8am-5pm and Sundays from 12pm-4pm. Gallery Admission is free. Gallery closed on Saturdays and February 16\, 17\, and April 12. Parking is normally free and ample on Sundays. Free school & group tours available arts.eastwestcenter.org.
