SUMMARY:E Pili Kakou I Hookahi Lahui 2020 (21st Annual)
DESCRIPTION:February 28\, 2020 – March 01\, 2020:\nE Pili Kakou I Hookahi Lahui 2020 (21st Annual). About E Pili Kakou I Hookahi Lahui:\nE Pili Kakou I Hookahi Lahui is a Kauai Event that brings together some of the world’s best hula teachers (kumu hula)\, students of hula\, and just everyday people who are interested to learn more about this ancient art.\nThe 2020 Event on Kauai will mark the 21st  year for E Pili Kakou I Hookahi Lahui\, and it is expected to be better than ever. This is a retreat and conference during which participants will be instructed in hula and chanting\, meet experts\, and much more. Similar Events are held in Japan\, Canada\, Tahiti\, Marqueses\, and other locations.\nThe 2-day Event on Kauai includes workshops\, question and answer sessions\, special sessions\, and a very special performance and celebration to wrap up this years’ E Pili Kakou I Hookahi Lahui.\nThe purpose of the conference is to promote and share the rich culture of Hawaii which includes\, of course\, hula. There are 2 different types of hula\, and both are covered at E Pili Kakou I Hookahi Lahui.\nThe first\, hula kahiko\, is the traditional style of hula. This includes drumming and chanting along with the dance\, and it all works together to tell a story. Some were afraid this art form was going to die out\, and even kings took step to keep it alive. Today\, E Pili Kakou I Hookahi Lahui is one more way to ensure that this Hawaiian custom is not lost.\nThe other type of hula dancing is hula auana. This is a modern twist on the hula in which the majority of the story is told through movement. Rather than chanting\, the dance is accompanied by ukulele or guitar music.\nWhether you are an experienced hula dancer or you just want to learn a bit about this ancient art\, consider registering for this popular Event on Kauai. www.epilikakou.com

SUMMARY:Dirty Cello at Kahilu Theater
DESCRIPTION:February 21\, 2020:\nDirty Cello at Kahilu Theater. From China to Iceland\, and all over the U.S.\, San Francisco based band\, Dirty Cello brings the world a high energy and unique spin on blues and bluegrass. Led by vivacious cross-over cellist\, Rebecca Roudman\, Dirty Cello is cello like you’ve never heard before. From down home blues with a wailing cello to virtuosic stompin’ bluegrass\, Dirty Cello is a band that gets your heart thumping and your toes tapping!\n“When lead guitar is replaced by the sound of hot licks on a cello\, blues\, rock and bluegrass rise to a new dimension. Dirty Cello – a four-piece band from San Francisco – makes its style of string music to inspire audiences to swing\, sway and dance.” Ashland Daily Tidings.\n“Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky\, carnival\, romantic\, sexy\, tangled\, electric\, fiercely rhythmic\, and textured\, and only occasionally classical.” Oakland Magazine “The band plays every style imaginable\, and does some fantastic covers. (Their rendition of “Purple Haze” is incredible.) But what is most spectacular about them is hearing the depth of soul in Roudman’s playing-it goes beyond what most people would expect from the instrument. She plays it with so much heart\, you’ll wonder why more bands don’t have a cellist.” Good Times Santa Cruz.\nTickets at kahilutheatre.org/Showinfo/Dirty-Cello

SUMMARY:Kona Historical Society Shrove Tuesday Special Bake
DESCRIPTION:February 20\, 2020:\nKona Historical Society Shrove Tuesday Special Bake. Kona Historical Society will make its famous Portuguese cinnamon bread to celebrate Shrove Tuesday on February 20\, from 10-noon at Kona Historical Society’s stone oven\, or forno\, located in the pasture below the Society’s Kalukalu Headquarters and its historic general store museum in Kealakekua. The public is invited to watch Kona Historical Society staff and volunteers create these sticky\, sweet loaves of cinnamon bread. Attendees will also learn about the traditional art of Portuguese bread making and the contributions of the Portuguese\, who arrived in Hawaii in the 1880s. While many of these immigrants worked in the sugar plantations\, a fair number did find their way to Kona dairies and are credited for helping develop this industry. Kona Historical Society makes cinnamon bread on Shrove Tuesday to pay homage to the days of the sugar plantations of the 1800s\, when resident Catholic Portuguese would mark the day by eating richer\, fatty foods and desserts before the ritual fasting of the Lent season\, which lasts 40 days. They would often use up butter and sugar prior to Lent by making large batches of malasadas\, the well-known and beloved Portuguese doughnut without a hole. Shrove Tuesday is also known as Fat Tuesday. Cinnamon bread loaves\, each costing $8\, can be purchased starting at 12:30 p.m. Bread sales go until 4 p.m. or sold out. konahistorical.org
