Throughout the Month of June: 
Obon Dance & Festival.  The Obon tradition was brought to Hawai`i by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making.  Free.  Festivities and Dance schedules and locations are listed below:

  • Friday & Saturday, June 3 & 4:  Lihue Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Kuhio Hwy, across from Kapaia Stitchery (nearest cross street, Kuene St.), Festivities being at 5 p.m., Dancing 7:30 p.m.  For more information call (808) 245-6262 or visit www.lihuehongwanjimission.com.
  • Friday & Saturday, June 10 – 11:  Waimea Shingon Mission, 9770-A Pule Road, Waimea.  Dancing 7:30 p.m.  For information call (808) 337-1854.
  • Friday & Saturday, June 17 – 18:  Kapaa Jodo Mission, 4524 Haua`ala Rd., Kapa`a.  Dancing 7:30 p.m.  For information call (808) 822-4319.
  • Friday & Saturday, June 24 – 25:  West Kaua`i Hongwanji Mission – Waimea Temple, 4675 Menehune Rd., Waimea.  Dancing 7:30 p.m.
