Great Whale Count – Month of February

Great Whale Count – Month of February. The annual Great Whale Count brings volunteers together to count whales from 12 survey sites along the shoreline of Maui as part of a long-term survey of humpback whales in Hawaii. This event provides the PWF Research department with a snapshot of trends in relative abundance of whales and is one of the world’s longest-running citizen scientist projects, also offering a chance to spend time at a favorite spot or to explore a new part of the island. Upcoming dates are Saturday, Jan 25, 2019, Saturday, Feb 29, 2019, and Saturday, March 28, 2019. Maui Sunday Market is held each Sunday from 4 pm to 8 pm in the Kahului Shopping Center parking lot. This popular event features live entertainment, food trucks, island vendors, Family Bingo, and activities showcasing the local community and Hawaii’s cultural traditions. Public admission and parking is free.
The Maui Sunday Market is presented by the Maui Food Technology Center, and is supported by the County of Maui Office of Economic Development, Hawaii Tourism Authority, and A&B Properties.

Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi

Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi Presented by Blues Bear Hawaii. Guitarist Stanley Jordan uses two hands to play each note in an advanced form of tapping that allows him to play melody and chords simultaneously. A four-time Grammy nominee, Jordan has performed at many jazz events, including Kool Jazz Festival, Concord Jazz Festival, and the Montreux International Jazz Festival. Come experience the touch technique of a master! The world-renowned guitarist presents a new live show called “Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi.” This is a tribute show—but it’s not pure imitation. As Jordan explains it, “This is my fantasy Jimi Hendrix concert if Jimi were still alive and playing today. By re-imagining his music and channeling his persona, I try to bring that fantasy to life.” The performance on January 24 will be a trio format, with Gary Kelly, a renowned bassist, and Kenwood Dennard, a percussion professor at the Berklee College of Music. Maui Oceanfront Marathon (12th Annual)

January 19, 2020:
Maui Oceanfront Marathon (12th Annual). The Marathon is a point to point race starting in Wailea at 5 a.m.
The Marathon Custom Start is same course and has a half hour head start.
The Half Marathon (13.1 miles) is an out and back oceanfront course starting at the Marathon oceanfront finish line at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina.
The Maui 15K (9.3 miles) is point to point oceanfront from Papalau Beach to Lahaina.
The Maui 10K (6.2 miles) is an out and back oceanfront course starting at the Marathon finish line at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina.
The Maui 5K run and non-competitive walk or jog starts at the 23.1 mark on the marathon course. (The starting area will be known as “Lone Palm Point” for lack of a name and obvious reasons,3.1 miles)

A Night of Comedy with Ari Shaffir

A Night of Comedy with Ari Shaffir. With special guest Chino LaForge Stand-up comedian, podcaster, and actor Ari Shaffir describes his comedy as a puppet show—except it’s much filthier and without the puppets. The New York native grew up Orthodox Jewish, spent two years in a yeshiva in Israel, and came back to America to lose his religion and become a comic. LA Weekly has called Shaffir “a gifted unyielding comic…a real force to be reckoned with.” Shaffir has released two Netflix specials, “Double Negative,” self-described as his version of a “Smashing Pumpkins Double Album.” Shaffir also hosts the wildly popular podcast, “Skeptic Tank,” a weekly interview show where he chats with everyone from parents to comedians to prostitutes, and is consistently among the top-rated podcasts on iTunes. Shaffir has released two stand-up specials on Comedy Central, and he continues to perform stand up to sold-out crowds nationwide. Chino LaForge, Hawai‘i’s award-winning and charismatic comedian,has been making waves—and he’s just getting started. Chino walks the line of offensive with raw stories and physical presentation. His animal-style comedy comes from a place of organic honesty, and is referred to as “gimmick-free.” This show contains adult subject matter. Ticket holders must be 18+. Camerata RCO is a unique ensemble comprised of members of Amsterdam’s renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. These colleagues founded this independent group with the desire to explore smaller more intimate repertoire. “We enjoy playing in the orchestra tremendously. However, we like to expand this joy by playing together in a small ensemble as well… we like to be in close contact with our audience. Kealailiahi – A Fragrant Offering of Aloha Celebrating 15 Years of Hula. With its first classes starting in November of 2004, Halau Kekuaokalaaualailiahi, under the direction of Iliahi and Haunani Paredes, began its hula journey with 75 brave haumana who were willing to give the young and inexperienced pair of kumu hula a chance. Now, 15 years later and with over 300 haumana, Iliahi and Haunani look back over their many blessings: lives have been interwoven and hearts touched; an ohana flourishes. Halau Kekuaokalaaualailiahi humbly presents KEALAILIAHI, a fragrant offering of aloha celebrating 15 wonderful years of hula: sharing mele, hula, and stories from their lei of memories, and honoring those who have made lasting impressions on their lives. A preshow program starts at 3 pm in the courtyard, with entertainment, silent/live auctions, and Hawaiian arts & craft marketplace. Tickets: $36, General Admission (plus applicable fees)
