Royal Hawaiian Center Free Music and Hula at the Royal Grove. Royal Hawaiian Center offers the very best in Hawaiian entertainment throughout November, including hula auana performances; music from Hawaii’s top recording artists; and evenings featuring steel guitar, slack key, and Hawaiian piano. Royal Hawaiian Center also features the only hula kahiko performance in Waikiki featuring award-winning halau every month. Visitors and kamaaina are invited to gather in The Royal Grove from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. to enjoy the free performances. The first week of the month features the Mele Pakolu series with three special nights of music and hula. Tuesday, November 5 – Steel Guitar Night, Alan Akaka Wednesday, November 6 – Slack Key Guitar Night, George Kuo Thursday, November 7 – Hawaiian Piano Night, Wehilani Ching & Ohana Hula Performances In November, Hawaiian music and hula auana, hula’s modern form, fills The Royal Grove Tuesday through Friday at twilight. The hour-long performances feature top island entertainers with a focus on Hawaiian language musical favorites. On Saturdays, hula kahiko is showcased with a halau hula (hula school) and their olapa (dancers) performing traditional hula where drumming and chanting are the accompaniment. It was an encounter that would shape his destiny and give the world one of the most exceptional and innovative uke players in the history of the instrument—an artist who has drawn comparisons to musical titans such as Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. A husband and father of two, Jake balances his stellar career with family life and community service. He travels to schools around the world spreading positive messages to young people, encouraging them to live drug free and find their passion—just as he did at age four when his mother gave him his first ukulele lesson. In the time since then, he has played a key role in the current revival of interest in the ukulele. Boo at the Zoo, presented by the Honolulu Zoo Society, is Waikiki’s best family-friendly Halloween Event! Located on the Stage Lawn at the Zoo, this family event will have lots of spooky fun with a Trick-or-Treat Trail, Spooky Story Times, Mad Science demonstrations, Conservation Education Stations, face painting, and lots of fun keiki activities, crafts and games. This year’s event will feature two Haunted Houses – one for the little ones and one for the older kids. Participation fee is $10 for Honolulu Zoo Society, $15 for non-members, and free for keiki 2 years and under. All activities are included with participation fee. Royal Hawaiian Center Hosts Fang-tastic Halloween Festivities. If you’ve got it, haunt it, over at Royal Hawaiian Center this Halloween! The Center will be hosting festive events for kids and pets, including two spook-tacular costume contests on October 20 and 27, 2019. The Halloween festivities kick off with the Center’s annual Howl-O-Ween Doggie Costume Contest partnership with Hawaii Doggie Bakery. The top 25 doggie contestants will have the chance to be part of the Howl-O-Ween Woof-tacular Doggie Parade on Sunday, October 20 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in The Royal Grove to compete for the title of top dog and win Royal Hawaiian Center gift cards along with other fantastic prizes. The Center continues its Halloween celebration with the annual Halloween Keiki Costume Contest on Sunday, October 27 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m., also held in The Royal Grove. Widely regarded as the largest costume contest in the state, keiki from infants to 10 years old and their parents are invited to compete for first, second, and third place prizes in four categories, in addition to an overall grand prize winner. This year’s categories include: Ohana Costumes (Parent and Child Costume Combo, infant to 10 years) Cutest Costume (ages infant to 2 years) Most Creative Costume (ages 3-5 years) Most Unique Costume (ages 6-10 years) Online registration begins on Tuesday, October 1 at www.RoyalHawaiianCenter.com/Events.
