Nani Ke Ao Nei Series – Na Mele Honua, Songs of the Earth

Oahu

Saturday, May 13:
Nani Ke Ao Nei Series – Na Mele Honua, Songs of the Earth.
A concert laden with stories and lore, songs, hula, and chant, themed around the natural environment, featuring the elements of nature: air, clouds, wind, the realm of mountains, ocean, and rain. Oli, hula, and song will describe the wonder of birds (manu); fish (ia); the forest (nahele); and pua including plants and flowers. Inspired by the verses of the song “Ke Ao Nani,” which many locals learn as keiki, the series highlights the balance of opposites in the natural world, which is so strongly expressed in Hawaiian culture. Hawaiian Mission Houses, 553 S. King St., Honolulu.  5:30 to 8 p.m. $30 in advance, or $35 at door. For tickets and information call (808) 447-3910 or visit http://www.missionhouses.org/.
